Best Mallet Putters

The best mallet putters tend to be much larger than blade putters and they usually come in various shapes and size, which helps in a number of ways. A lot of the time most of the weight in a mallet putter can be found in the club face however because of its design, weight can then be redistributed to other parts of the head to help stabilize and create balance for your stroke. Mallet designs are also the most forgiving putters because they tend to have a larger sweet spot, whilst the weight in the club head also helps diminish twisting throughout the strike. Additionally if you struggle with alignment, a mallet putter could be the way to go. Below we have the best mallets from our putter reviews. Additionally we also recommend checking out our specific guides on the best women's putters and best putters for beginners too.

Best Value Mallet Putters

There are some great value mallet putters from the main manufacturers that bring all the benefits of perimeter weighting and the latest face technology to a variety of putter head shapes such as these:

Zebra AIT 1 Putter

Excellent value for money and a cool crown design

Reasons to avoid

Simplicity of design may lack wow factor

An iconic design in the world of golf, Zebra has introduced the AIT 1 putter to harken back to the days of the Ram Zebra design which won Major titles. Compared to the original, the face is deeper with an insert and the head is larger and rounder to create more forgiveness. In a nod to the past, the AIT 1 sole plate still features the Zebra turning its head and of course the distinctive alignment lines on the crown.

These are now grey on black instead of black on grey, which helps to make the central white line stand out more. The deeper head allows the lines to be longer and this combination creates an alignment aid at address with a strong visual look. Performance wasn't just about looks though as the roll and sound in testing was very good. It is a reasonably forgiving putter too and Zebra has done an excellent job of reinventing the original mallet for the modern game.

Mizuno M.Craft OMOI 03 Putter

Well balanced head

Good adjustability options

Blue colour create cool alignment shadows

Reasons to avoid

-
Head shape a bit compact

Next up is the OMOI 03 putter from Mizuno which is the only mallet in the new range. OMOI is a Japanese adjective for ‘heavy’ and as such the putter is 383 grams, the reason for this is that with the standard Mizuno M.Craft putter, Mizuno found that most users made their putters heavier by using the bigger weights from the supplied adjustable kit. You can still do this with the M.Craft OMOI 03 putter as there are two 3g and 13g weights to replace the standard 8g weights in the sole to vary the weight across a range of 20g.

Looks wise the mallet is rather compact and the blade length quite short, whilst the blue finish was very cool. There is also Black Ion and Double Nickel finishes as well. All in all the face balanced design does create a very stable, forgiving putter for those who can get a little lively with their hands.

TaylorMade TP Hydro Blast Bandon 3 Putter

Produces sun glare from certain directions

The Bandon 3 mallet from TaylorMade has a short neck hosel, which provides a little more toe hang than the plumbers neck found on the Bandon 1. It sits completely flush to the ground and while the alignment assistance on offer from the short black sight line is limited, the winged shape helped us present it squarely to the ball.

The sandstone finish on the head is absolutely stunning. For something that looks so raw, it still manages to be elegant and premium, although it does reflect the sun more than we’d have liked.

Overall we felt it had a similar feel to a blade putter but in a mallet form which means it may suit a wide range of players. Off the face, it feels solid and offers up a surprisingly firm and loud sound at impact given the deep grooves on the face insert.

Quite a large putter and busy head which won't suit all

The Wilson Staff Infinite Buckingham putter has a very recognizable head shape that features counterbalance technology. This combines a heavier head and grip weights to move the balance point closer to the hands for a smoother and more controlled putting stroke.

As such, in testing it felt extremely stable through the strike and impressively twist-resistant, which instills confidence over the ball. The feel off the double-milled face is also pleasant. It’s more of a soft, gentle thud than a high-pitched ping which many will enjoy. The Buckingham also comes with an oversize grip as standard which is great for golfers who use a claw grip, or golfers who find themselves gripping too hard on a thin grip and want a softer feel.

Best High MOI Mallet Putters

High MOI mallet putters have driven the shape of this sector for many years as the larger head size allows weight to be placed deep in the corners to maximise the resistance to twisting on off-centre hits. The latest designs take this to the next level with multi-material heads that mange the weight distribution more effectively, yet still keep the putter light and easy to use. Here are our favourites.

Prefer darker head of Triple Track version

The Odyssey Eleven putter has a very high MOI to improve forgiveness on off-centre hits. Made from a composite head design using a steel crown with a lightweight TPU & aluminum under-body the forgiveness comes from heavyweight steel weights in each of the back corners.

There are different alignment line options on the head and and a choice of hosels for a straight or an arc stroke. The latest generation Stroke Lab shaft stimulates a better stroke tempo and the White Hot insert in the face improves the roll to help you make more putts. The Odyssey Eleven is one of the best putters on the market because it delivers on its aim for maximum stability in a head shape that is pleasing to look at.

Feels slightly heavier than most putters

Offering excellent value for a milled face mallet putter, this is an exciting addition to this list, designed by master golf manufacturers Cleveland. The HB Soft Milled 14 putter delivers excellent balance and clear alignment lines, making it a fantastic putter for any mid-handicap golfer looking to save shots on the greens.

Boasting a 3º face loft, Cleveland have added their Speed Optimised Face Technology to this putter which ensures a consistent speed off the clubface when you strike the ball. It does feel a little heavier than the other putters in the HB range and for that reason, has a solid feel. But that also makes it quite forgiving, and if anything, confidence inspiring, and the excellent alignment lines on the back of the clubhead help to frame the ball nicely on the green.

Scotty Cameron Phantom X12 2022 Putter

One of the best feeling putters on this list

Specifications

Loft: 3.5º

Length: 33"-35"

Reasons to buy

+
High MOI design feels light to use
+
Better alignment design
+
All metal face design

Reasons to avoid

-
No choice of hosel options

One of the best Scotty Cameron putters, the Phantom X range is ideal for those who want premium mallet putter. The Scotty Cameron Phantom X 12 putter is the highest MOI mallet and for the latest range is now the only one with a black aluminum face. Combining this lighter material in the face with the heavier silver steel wings means that more weight is around the perimeter of the head which improves the forgiveness.

Sometimes from long range these high MOI putters can struggle as the head struggles to rotate with the longer stroke, but with the Phantom X12 we thought it was easier than most to get the pace and direction right. We also enjoyed the performance from short and mid-range as well. With a long alignment line and excellent Pistolero grip the Phantom X 12 is light to use and very stable through impact and will be ideal for those who want a face balanced putter with more margin for error.

Reasons to avoid

Head a little on compact side

One of two mallet shapes in Wilson's latest range of putters the TM22 boasts some excellent features which make it one of the most forgiving putters on the market. And Wilson have surpassed themselves here, employing a clever use of milling lines to create visual differences for alignments. It is made from a 304 block of stainless steel and looks fantastic at the address, framing the ball against the club face thanks to the fangs and different milling patterns you'll notice on the club.

The subtle alignment lines improve the overall aesthetic of this putter, making it a great tool to use if you're looking for more accuracy around the greens. It's also great for those who have a small arc in their swing, thanks to the slight overhang the club's hosel boasts. Combine that with the milling pattern on the club's 3º lofted face and you'll really feel the premium feedback it delivers, even when you hit your shot slightly off center. Not shown above is the premium leather pistol handle that also comes with the club which has some smart contouring around the upper part of the handle which will complement whatever grip style you employ.

Evnroll ER11vx Putter

Sweet face offers superb forgiveness

Specifications

Loft: 2º-3º

Length: 33"-35"

Reasons to buy

+
Sweet Face grooves for consistent ball speeds
+
Large clear alignment lines

Forgiving head

Reasons to avoid

-
Sound a little on hollow side

The extended version of the ER11v putter, the Evnroll ER11vx comprises of a large mallet head with additional 303 stainless steel weights in the rear corners of each side. This therefore increases the MOI further, making it more stable and forgiving on off centre hits and one of the best putters on the market.

Certainly on the green this is a forgiving and very large head for a mallet putter. The thick white alignment line goes the full depth and draws your eyes to ensuring that the putter is pointing where you want the ball to go. Another key feature we liked in testing was the void on the sole of the putter which not only helps players pick up the golf ball without bending down, but creates a slightly hollow and higher pitched sound at impact.

Bettinardi Inovai 8.0 Putter

Reasons to buy

Clean head with good alignment lines
+
Quality milled face gives good feel

Reasons to avoid

-
Relatively small head for mallet

The Bettinardi Inovai 8.0 putter is their milled face balanced mallet that offers a high degree of forgiveness for the size of head. The chrome leading edge combines with a dark 6061 military grade aluminum body to create some distinctive alignment lines. As you would expect from Bettinardi, the feel is very good thanks to the milled grooves in the face. The forgiveness is good for this size of head and the sound is solid, if sometimes a touch on the hollow side due to the cavity on the sole.

The model tested came with the Spud single bend hosel making it a face balanced putter, but there is a wide choice of shaft lengths, grips and hosel types so you can customize the Inovai 8.0 to your putting stroke.

Ball comes off on the slow side

This year has seen an expansion of the V-Series, within which the flagship model is the EV5 due to its ‘3x3 versatility’. This refers to the fact that it is available in various color combinations via three rear interchangeable chassis designs. There is even a choice of six hosel options too, so every visual preference and stroke type is truly catered for. The impressive customization on offer sees this putter into our 2023 Editor's Choice awards.

The EV5 is undoubtedly one of the most forgiving putters around. Despite being a compact mallet, the head feels more stable than previous Evnroll putters of a similar size and helped by the special grooves on the face, I was able to knock putts often to within gimmie range from long distance and scare the hole frequently from 20 feet and in.

The Caramel Copper PVD finish will not be to everyone's taste

The Bettinardi Queen B 11 Putter is a fantastic looking club that comes with an excellent bronze clubhead. It looks stunning behind the ball, with its Caramel Copper PVD finish giving it a cool, rustic look that steals the headlines. Its shelf appeal and elegance is a real seller but we loved how Bettinardi have also thought ahead, putting a glare-resistant finish on the clubhead that came in handy when we took this offering out on the course on a sunny day. The putter is slightly toe-heavy and is great for the golfer who struggles to close the face through impact, with its half-moon shape making it look very inviting behind the ball but also offering an excellent feel on impact.

Equally, Bettinardi have also paid a lot of attention to the putter's club face. It comes with new mini honeycomb milling, which is eight percent smaller than the honeycomb milling on some of the best Bettinardi golf putters. That helps you get greater connection on the golf ball, allowing you to obtain a soft, responsive feel on each shot, akin to what you might find on some of the best Scotty Cameron putters. During testing we felt it delivered particularly on longer putts, with the single sight line on the crown being a great alignment aid that helped us improve on our accuracy. Ultimately, this is a premium putter that we really enjoyed using and matched up with many of the best golf putters available right now.

Some may dislike the red shaft and thin grip

The Odyssey White Hot OG Nano #7 putter combines a recognizable shape with a white hot insert in a compact head. Don't be fooled by its size and short offset hosel, as this is a very well balanced putter than packs in a lot of forgiveness.

The White Hot face insert gives a good feel even if the sound is a little hollow in this small head. From our testing we felt the Nano seems very forgiving and consistent for its size and the toe hang set up should appeal to better golfers who prefer a compact head.

The White Hot OG range also has a number of larger mallets which provide similar benefits such as the standard size #7, #7 Bird, 2-Ball and Rossie. It might not be the best Odyssey putter on the market, but it certainly offers excellent value given the feel and forgiveness on offer.

TaylorMade Spider GTX Putter

TruPath alignment aid frames ball well
+
Forgiving head for mid-sized mallet
+
Good sound and feel from insert

Reasons to avoid

-
Head wants to sit on trailing edge at address

An upgrade on the much loved shape on the TaylorMade Spider X, the Spider GTX is one of the best mallet putters available right now. It features the TruPath alignment Y that was a big hit on the Spider X, helping golfers line the ball up against the face of the club and aim towards the hole. That Y shape flows into a single white bar with a sight line that hangs over the leading edge of the club, giving you a handy directional tool as well as a futuristic aesthetic. The GTX also comes in six different colors, including black, red, blue and silver, that helped to focus our eyes on the ball and alignment line.

Perhaps the most interesting addition to this club, though, is the 154g tunsten stability bar which protrudes from the rear of the crown. This has been installed to shift the putter's center of gravity lower and towards the back of the club, and looks very similar to the weighted wings seen on the Spider X. This innovative weighting system helps to improve both the stability and forgiveness of this mid-sized mallet, which has an MOI of 5330g/cm2, which is a pretty high figure. That combines well with the firmer feel of the Pure Roll 2 insert, to make this one of the most forgiving putters on the market.

Some may want a firmer feel with more speed

The Odyssey White Hot Versa 12 S putter features the brand's patented Versa alignment technology that has been created following feedback from short game coach, Phil Kenyon, as well as a number of the world's top professionals. This is a stunning compact mallet, boasting a cool black colorway that is contrasted by the White Hot insert on the face of the club. It has a mid-sized footprint which fills the void between blade and mallet perfectly, although we would personally say it's closer to a mallet style. It's worth noting that the unusual shape won’t suit everyone’s taste, but the bigger head gave us a greater awareness of where putts were being struck. It’s bold and beautiful, placing it comfortably among the best Odyssey putters on the market.

Aesthetically then the Versa 12 S delivers and, feel wise, it also provides a premium feel, with the urethane material and White Hot insert delivering a pleasing sound and weighty feel that makes the face feel very stable. We enjoyed the weighty feel on the club which helped to make it feel very stable and encouraged a pendulum-style putting stroke. The Versa is also fitted with Odyssey's latest Stroke Lab shaft, that are 40g lighter than traditional shafts, allowing weight to be pushed to the putter head and grip. That again improves the consistency of your backswing timing and face-angle at impact. Ultimately, this is perhaps one of the best mallet putters on the market right now!

How we test putters

When it comes to product testing, our reviews and buyers' guides are built upon a rigorous testing procedure as well as the knowledge and experience of the test team.

The putter section is headed up by Martin Hopley, one of the foremost UK equipment reviewers with over 20 years' experience. Other members of the Golf Monthly team contribute to the putter tests as well, and all writers are able to efficiently test the vast majority of the biggest product releases and convey the pros and cons eloquently.

Getting into specifics, we test the putters outdoors on real greens with premium golf balls to get a thorough understanding of design features, feel, sound and looks. Ultimately, we aim to be as insightful and honest as possible in our reviews so it is important to acknowledge that no manufacturer can buy a good review. This is because our team tells it how it is.

How to choose a new putter

When trying to find one of the best mallet putters, there are several things to consider...

Size

So you want a mallet putter right? Well it is up to you what size of mallet you want because some of the models above are large to aid MOI and forgiveness, whilst some others are more mid-mallet in shape and have smaller footprints.

Looks

The putter has to inspire confidence so you have to enjoy looking down on it that's for sure. Manufacturers are aware of this and so have designed a wide range of looks to choose from and therefore you just need to look at the designs you like the aesthetics of.

Feel

This is a really important factor to consider because on the market right now are a wide range of firm and soft feeling putters to choose from. One thing we do recommend is how fast or slow are the greens you play on? If you typically putt on slow greens, a firmer feeling face will suit you more whereas if you putt on ultra-fast greens a softer feel will work more efficiently and help you control distance.

Arc Strength

For some players, their stroke tends to be fairly straight back and through whereas some golfers tend to putt more in, to square, to in, which would be referred to as a stronger arc. Finding out what kind of arc you have is vital to picking the right putter for your stroke.

Price

In our guide to the best putters on the market right now, we featured 18 putters that range in price. This tells you a little bit about the range of putters there are out there today but this can also help you narrow your search down a bit further. Why is there so much difference in price? This comes down to factors like technology, craftsmanship and the brand.
